Southern Rural Water has supported Wellington Toy Library to buy a new water play table and birthday party kits for local kids to enjoy this World Play Day.

World Play Day is an international day celebrating children's right to play on Tuesday, 28 May every year. This year’s theme focuses on the role of toy libraries in growing sustainable cities and communities through play.

Southern Rural Water General Manager Service Delivery Simon Wilkinson said water is the lifeblood of Gippsland’s agricultural economy and the $500 sponsorship is aimed at enhancing community cohesion and social connectedness.

“We are proud to support Wellington Toy Library’s work to make toys available to local kids and their families, many of whom we supply with water to grow Victoria’s healthy and nutritious food and fibre,” he said.

“Wellinton Toy Library is a well-loved hub that’s important for binding farming communities together and we hope the new toys secured through our sponsorship bring hours of fun to local kids,” he said.

Wellington Toy Library is one of eight organisations Southern Rural Water has supported across southern Victoria in 2024.

Wellington Toy Library is a not-for-profit organisation that has been serving the community in Sale and surrounding towns for over 40 years. Run entirely by volunteers, it offers members access to hundreds of toys, games, puzzles, and costumes to play with and borrow.

Wellington Toy Library President Angela Reynolds said toy libraries are a great way for families to reduce their environmental footprint through waste and to save money, which is important for many people struggling with the cost of living.

“Play is vital for child development and learning and toys provide the tools through which they can stretch their imagination, test their reasoning and negotiate challenges and ideas with other kids,” she said.

“We would like to thank Southern Rural Water for supporting our work in helping families live more sustainable lives and have fun in thriftier times,” she said.
