Southern Rural Water is continuing its investigation into dams in the Moorabool area, to confirm they are compliant with the Water Act 1989.
The current investigation started after a community group raised concerns with dams in March 2023.
Terrain and site access can be challenging on foot, and that’s why Southern Rural Water has bolstered its compliance activities with drone technology.
Southern Rural Water is investigating around 200 dams in the Moorabool area.
Investigations are continuing, and around 140 dams have been cleared and are not in breach of the Water Act 1989.
We are continuing to move through the investigation and will provide more information once it is complete.
In the event breaches are detected, Southern Rural Water may request dams be decommissioned, and issue fines. The maximum penalty for breaches under the relevant section of the Water Act 1989 for an individual is $46,154, and $230,772 for a body corporate.
If you see illegal dam activity, you’re encouraged to report it to Southern Rural Water on 1300 139 510.
