Upgrade of Cowwarr Weir underway

Works on Cowwarr Weir are underway, and we have already installed a refurbished gearbox as part of a mechanical upgrade of the spillway operating gear on the weir.

In early May, a crane lifted the refurbished gearbox – which weighs a hefty one tonne – into place on Gate 3. The gearbox helps raise and lower Gate 3, which regulates the flow of water downstream for irrigation and to enable healthy waterways.

The first major mechanical overhaul since Cowwarr Weir was built in 1957, the gearbox was refurbished offsite with upgrades to replace some components, as well as to check the condition of the remaining equipment.

Capital Delivery Engineer Brendan Kingsbury said the upgrade works are being carried out in stages, without disrupting services to customers.

“The next stage for Gate 3 is to bolt in and connect the equipment and power, before testing its operational capability. We’ll then move on to Gate 2, and then Gate 1, repeating the process.

“This mechanical upgrade will ensure Cowwarr Weir can continue to supply water to the Macalister Irrigation District for years to come,” Brendan said.

The weir also plays a vital role in helping regulate environmental flows for the Thomson River and Rainbow Creek.
